In a significant ruling, an Alwar court in Rajasthan has handed life imprisonment to nine convicts, including former BJP district president Inderjit Singh alias ‘Pata’, for the 2016 murder of Avtar Singh. Each convict has been fined Rs 1 lakh, with additional imprisonment mandated in case of non-payment as per the law.
The verdict, delivered by District and Sessions Judge Harendra Singh, prompted heightened security measures around the court complex and in Pata village to ensure law and order. The convicted individuals include Anup Singh, Kamaljit Singh, Gurvachan Singh, Jaspal Singh, Kulwant Singh, Aman Singh, Harvinder Singh, and Vishvendra Singh.
During the trial, evidence from 22 witnesses, medical and postmortem reports, and investigative documents were pivotal in securing the convictions. Despite pleas for leniency from the defence, the court upheld the sentence, finding all nine guilty under the relevant legal provisions.
The incident, occurring on June 10, 2016, in Pata village under Naugawan police station limits, stemmed from a dispute related to the village sarpanch election, where Avtar Singh, connected to the prime accused Inderjit Singh, was fatally assaulted. Allegedly, political animosity and family discord over the election triggered the attack, resulting in Avtar Singh being surrounded and assaulted with various weapons.
