An American passenger from a Dutch cruise ship affected by hantavirus has been confirmed to have the virus, while another passenger shows mild symptoms, as per the US Department of Health and Human Services. All 17 American citizens from the MV Hondius cruise ship are being airlifted to the United States, with two individuals in biocontainment units as a precautionary measure. They will first be taken to the Regional Emerging Special Pathogen Treatment Center in Nebraska for assessment and care.
The US Department of Health and Human Services mentioned that upon reaching the facilities, each person will undergo clinical evaluation and receive necessary care based on their health condition. The outbreak associated with the cruise ship has led to eight suspected cases and three fatalities as of the latest update. Hantavirus has an incubation period of one to eight weeks from initial exposure to the onset of symptoms, according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
In the United Kingdom, 20 nationals who were evacuated from the same hantavirus-affected cruise ship have been isolated in a hospital in northwest England. They arrived in Manchester and were subsequently transferred to Arrowe Park Hospital for medical observation. The group will undergo clinical assessment and testing during their stay, with plans for further self-isolation if they remain symptom-free for 42 days.
Emergency measures have been implemented by the British government following the outbreak linked to the MV Hondius, including isolating and monitoring all passengers and crew members for a total of 45 days. Additionally, a specialist military and medical team has been dispatched to Tristan da Cunha, a remote British Overseas Territory, after a British national on the island tested positive for hantavirus.
