American passengers from the cruise ship affected by a hantavirus outbreak will undergo quarantine in Nebraska upon reaching the United States. They will be accommodated at the National Quarantine Unit, a secure facility at the University of Nebraska Medical Centre campus in Omaha. The cruise ship, MV Hondius, is scheduled to dock in Tenerife, Spain’s Canary Islands, on Sunday.
The US State Department is organizing a repatriation flight for the 17 American citizens onboard the ship. Currently, seven Americans who were on the vessel are self-isolating in their homes across five states. Fortunately, none of them are displaying any symptoms of the virus, as confirmed by local health officials.
The CDC has raised its Emergency Operations Centers’ alert level to “Level 3” in response to the hantavirus outbreak. This classification, considered the lowest level, indicates the severity of the situation. In Spain, health authorities have identified a second monitored contact related to the hantavirus incident involving the MV Hondius cruise ship. The individual, a woman residing in Catalonia, was in close proximity to a deceased Dutch traveler on a shared flight.
