Union Home Minister Amit Shah has promised Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma that the Central government will supply rice worth Rs 10 crore to aid refugees in Mizoram. The assurance came during a meeting in New Delhi where Lalduhoma highlighted the presence of around 40,000 refugees from Manipur, Bangladesh, and Myanmar in Mizoram. Shah affirmed the government’s commitment to provide the rice for the relief and support of these refugees.
The Mizoram Chief Minister, currently in the national capital for official duties, discussed various issues concerning Mizoram’s development and welfare with the Union Home Minister. Lalduhoma also raised the issue of Mizoram not receiving assistance under the Security Related Expenditure (SRE) Scheme due to the state’s peaceful environment free from insurgency-related problems. He requested inclusion in the scheme to bolster efforts against drug trafficking, trans-border crimes, and cyber threats.
Additionally, Lalduhoma urged for more project proposals under the PM-DeVINE Scheme to accelerate development in the North-Eastern region. He emphasized the challenges posed by the large number of refugees in Mizoram and sought increased support from the Central government to continue providing humanitarian aid while fulfilling developmental commitments. Mizoram has been accommodating over 30,000 Myanmar nationals and around 2,365 refugees from Bangladesh, along with internally displaced tribals from Manipur.
