Union Home Minister Amit Shah led a meeting to ensure smooth operations of the High-Level Committee on Demographic Changes, headed by Justice Prakash Prabhakar Naolekar (Retd). The committee’s focus lies on studying demographic shifts, particularly in border regions, with plans to visit urban and industrial areas for assessment. The first session of the committee has been held, setting the agenda for its future activities.
The Union Home Ministry will extend necessary support for the committee’s functioning under the guidance of the former Supreme Court judge. Established on May 26 this year, the Committee on Demographic Changes was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15, 2025, emphasizing the challenges posed by unnatural demographic changes due to infiltration and other factors. Justice Naolekar clarified that the committee’s role is advisory, with its recommendations subject to government consideration and potential implementation.
The committee, led by Justice Naolekar, will focus on demographic changes and illegal migration, particularly in border areas, cities, and tribal regions, while considering the broader national demographic landscape. It aims to identify the root causes of demographic shifts and propose effective mechanisms for detecting and deporting illegal infiltrators. Justice Naolekar highlighted the committee’s authority to request information from various entities and emphasized the deadline for submitting the final report within a year, with a provision for a six-month extension if needed.
