Union Home Minister Amit Shah criticized the Opposition in the Lok Sabha for questioning the Speaker’s integrity, stating that it undermines the credibility of democratic institutions in the country. Shah highlighted that despite no exceptional incidents, a 10-hour discussion had been scheduled, which extended to nearly 13 hours with active participation from both sides. Over 42 Members of Parliament engaged in the debate, showcasing the House’s commitment to accommodating diverse viewpoints.
Emphasizing the finality of the Speaker’s rulings as per Lok Sabha rules, Shah noted that while disagreements are natural, questioning the Speaker’s integrity goes against established norms. He underscored the significance of parliamentary traditions, describing the Lok Sabha as a key democratic platform with a global reputation beyond India’s borders.
Shah cautioned that casting doubts on the Speaker’s integrity could tarnish India’s democratic processes internationally, highlighting the importance of resolving disputes through dialogue rather than confrontation. He expressed concern over the current strained atmosphere, where even approaching the Speaker’s chamber has become contentious, calling it a shameful situation.
Stressing the Speaker’s neutral role above party politics, Shah lamented the Opposition’s actions, stating that questioning the credibility of the mediating institution jeopardizes the democratic foundation built over 75 years.
