Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated Delhi’s initiative to plant 70 lakh trees at 34 locations. The event saw the planting of a sapling by Shah in the Central Ridge area, home to the President’s Bodyguard. Among the attendees were Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and other dignitaries.
The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is backing the campaign, aiming to plant approximately 600 trees and 50,000 shrubs. Vice Chairperson Kuljeet Singh Chahal mentioned that over 50,000 planting pits have been readied for this purpose. The planting will focus on native and environmentally sustainable tree species like Peepal, Neem, and Jamun.
The initiative will also include the planting of ornamental and native shrubs to enrich NDMC’s green spaces. Chahal emphasized the involvement of NDMC Council Members, Heads of Departments, and employees in the plantation drive. He highlighted that the plantation drive is not a one-day event but an ongoing community effort.
Under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam – On Sunday” campaign, NDMC has successfully completed 31 consecutive Sunday plantation drives. Apart from these weekly activities, plantation efforts are carried out during national festivals and public events. The campaign has seen active participation from various groups, showcasing a strong sense of community involvement.
