Union Home Minister Amit Shah marked a significant day for Assam by initiating the construction of the proposed second complex of the Assam Legislative Assembly in Dibrugarh. This move aims to bolster governance and enhance administrative accessibility for the people in Upper Assam.
During a public event at Khanikar, Home Minister Shah emphasized that the new Assembly complex, along with the MLA hostel, will streamline governance processes in the region once finished. The project is expected to bridge the gap between the administration and the citizens, bringing the benefits of good governance closer to the people of Upper Assam.
The estimated cost of the new Assembly complex and MLA hostel ranges between Rs 284 crore and Rs 300 crore. These structures are being designed to combine traditional Assamese architectural features with modern amenities, ensuring a balance between cultural identity and operational efficiency. The initiative is set to decentralize administrative activities and fortify institutional infrastructure in Upper Assam.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, present at the ceremony, hailed the endeavor as a significant stride towards positioning Dibrugarh as Assam’s “second capital.” He highlighted that the new Assembly complex will particularly enhance accessibility and administrative coordination for districts like Tinsukia, Dhemaji, and other regions of Upper Assam.
In the same event, Home Minister Shah inaugurated Phase I of the Khanikar Multi-Disciplinary Sports Complex, developed at an approximate cost of Rs 238 crore. This sports facility, touted as Assam’s largest, features a modern indoor stadium, a swimming pool, and various other amenities. The project aims to foster a sports culture and nurture budding talent from the area.
Emphasizing the importance of world-class sports infrastructure, Minister Shah mentioned that it would open up new avenues for youth and facilitate the identification and grooming of sporting talent at the grassroots level. His visit to Dibrugarh forms part of a broader agenda of official and developmental activities in Assam, with the events witnessing the presence of senior state ministers, elected representatives, and officials, all under tight security measures.
The state government views the new Assembly complex and sports infrastructure as pivotal milestones in Assam’s continuous endeavors to enhance governance, regional progress, and empower the youth.
