Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to lead a crucial meeting in Kolkata on Friday with the BJP’s newly elected MLAs. The primary agenda is to finalize the party’s choice for the Chief Minister of West Bengal, marking a significant step towards government formation in the state.
This meeting of the BJP legislature party holds immense importance as it will determine the leader of the house, ultimately confirming the next Chief Minister. Central leaders are actively involved in overseeing the selection process as the party gears up to establish its inaugural government in West Bengal.
The timing of this development is critical, following the formal conclusion of the previous West Bengal government’s term on Thursday. The Governor has officially dissolved the 17th West Bengal Legislative Assembly, signaling the end of the Assembly’s term as of May 7.
Despite the dissolution of the Assembly, outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee continues to identify herself as the “Chief Minister of West Bengal” on various social media platforms. The election results have sparked interest due to significant shifts at the constituency level, with the BJP securing 95 victories, including 80 seats previously not held by the party.
In Mamata Banerjee’s constituency of Bhabanipur, located in south Kolkata, she was defeated by BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari by 15,105 votes, with a notable discrepancy between voter roll deletions and winning margins. The BJP’s stronghold in Tollyganj saw minister Aroop Biswas losing by 6,013 votes, accompanied by a substantial number of voter roll deletions. The BJP’s success in Jadavpur and Indus further underscores the party’s growing influence in the region.
With the Legislative Assembly dissolved and the state undergoing a political transition, all eyes are on the upcoming BJP legislature party meeting. This gathering is poised to formally pave the way for the announcement of West Bengal’s new Chief Minister.
