Former West Indies fast bowler Ian Bishop has highlighted the need for India to enhance their fast bowling resources and bolster their batting strength to narrow the gap with six-time champions Australia. India faced an early exit from the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup after a defeat to Australia at Lord’s. The Indian team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, struggled due to a lack of clarity in their best playing eleven and a lack of synchronization across all departments.
Bishop emphasized the importance of adding more pace to India’s bowling attack, citing the Australians’ success in balancing their bowling with both spin and pace. He also stressed the significance of power-hitting in T20 cricket, an area where India needs improvement. Reflecting on India’s performance, Bishop suggested tactical changes like introducing Richa Ghosh earlier in the batting order to strengthen the team’s power-hitting capabilities.
Despite some positive performances by players like Shafali Verma and Sree Charani, India faced challenges with an inconsistent middle-order and frequent changes in batting positions. The team struggled with injuries, fielding a different bowling combination in each match and facing disruptions due to key players being sidelined. India’s fielding also posed issues, with multiple dropped catches throughout the tournament.
Bishop noted that India needed to set higher targets to challenge dominant teams like Australia and stressed the importance of developing potent seamers alongside their spinners. He highlighted the necessity for India to identify and nurture format-specific players, emphasizing the gradual impact of initiatives like the Women’s Premier League (WPL) in shaping the future of Indian cricket. Bishop drew parallels with the Indian Premier League (IPL) and emphasized the need for structured development programs to groom domestic talent for international success.
