Megastar Amitabh Bachchan recently discussed the cultural and spiritual importance of the traditional Indian greeting “Namaskaar.” He highlighted how this folded-hand gesture, also known as Namaste or Anjali Mudra, gained global prominence during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 as a safe and respectful alternative to handshakes.
In a blog post, Big B explained that “Namaste” originates from Sanskrit, with “namah” meaning ‘bow’ or ‘salutation,’ and ‘te’ meaning ‘to you,’ translating to ‘I bow to you.’ This gesture symbolizes various interpretations, such as the union of the individual self with the divine in Hindu philosophy and the balance of body and mind in yogic traditions.
The actor further elaborated on the gesture’s significance in Buddhism and Jainism, representing humility, peace, and respect for all living beings. Notably, during the pandemic, many world leaders embraced Namaskaar as a safe form of greeting due to its hygienic nature and universal respect, emphasizing its enduring presence in temple art, classical dance, and ancient scriptures.
Reflecting on the deeper meaning behind Namaskaar, Bachchan expressed gratitude, reverence, and recognition of the sacred essence within each individual. He acknowledged his fans’ unwavering support for peace, calmness, devotion, and dedication, underscoring the profound values embedded in this traditional gesture.
