Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Karnataka Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, and Union Jal Shakti Minister C. R. Patil will jointly inaugurate the newly installed crest gates of the Tungabhadra Project on June 25. The project, crucial for Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, has been upgraded with the installation of 33 new gates at a cost of Rs 51 crore.
The Tungabhadra Project, serving as a significant water source for agricultural lands in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, has completed the installation of all gates. Originally built 73 years ago, the project faced challenges when Gate No. 19 was washed away in August 2024. Following directives from Chief Minister Chandrababu, a temporary ‘stop-log’ gate was promptly installed to prevent water wastage.
The states of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka responded to the National Dam Safety Authority’s recommendation to replace all spillway gates by successfully installing new gates within six months. This revitalization effort ensures the project’s continued support for irrigation and drinking water needs in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana.
A delegation from Karnataka invited Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu to the inauguration ceremony, emphasizing the collaborative efforts between the two states. Telangana’s Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy has directed officials to safeguard the state’s water rights from the Tungabhadra river, underscoring the importance of equitable water usage among the states.
