The Andhra Pradesh government is exploring the possibility of implementing a two-day work-from-home policy for government offices as part of cost-cutting measures due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, during a State Cabinet meeting, instructed officials to assess the viability of this initiative in certain departments. This decision aligns with the “My country, my responsibility” campaign, where public representatives and officials will voluntarily reduce convoy vehicles, opt for virtual meetings, and observe a “No Vehicle Friday” weekly.
In response to the prevailing situation in West Asia and Prime Minister Modi’s call for action, specific directives were issued by the Chief Minister to enforce austerity measures. The Cabinet emphasized the importance of conserving fuel, preserving foreign exchange reserves, promoting the export of locally grown agricultural products, and reducing imports like oil, gas, and urea. Public representatives and officials were urged to lead by example in embracing these cost-saving practices.
To further support the austerity drive, plans were outlined to minimize fuel consumption in official vehicles, promote the purchase of electric vehicles for government use, and raise awareness through extensive campaigns. The initiative also encourages eco-friendly practices among citizens, such as walking and cycling, with a proposal for ministers and officials to cycle to the Secretariat weekly to set a positive precedent.
Chief Minister Naidu highlighted the significance of reducing foreign travel, opting for domestic holidays, and prioritizing the purchase of locally made goods over foreign products. He specifically mentioned the need to limit gold purchases to conserve foreign exchange reserves, urging the public to make informed choices in their spending habits.
