A special court in Rajamahendravaram revoked the bail of Anantha Babu, a member of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council from the YSR Congress Party, in connection to the murder of a Dalit youth and driver, Veedhi Subrahmanyam. Anantha Babu, who had been granted bail by the Supreme Court, was apprehended for allegedly intimidating witnesses in the case.
The arrest unfolded dramatically as Anantha Babu exited a court following a bail cancellation petition hearing. Subsequently, he was detained at the Rajamahendravaram Central Jail. The Sarpavaram Police Station in Kakinada received complaints from four crucial witnesses in the murder case against Anantha Babu, accusing him of attempting to bribe them to alter their statements.
Accusations included claims of offering money and issuing death threats to coerce witnesses into changing their testimonies. The MLC faced charges of witness tampering and criminal intimidation. Special Public Prosecutor Muppalla Subbarao filed a plea in the Rajahmundry Special Court seeking the immediate annulment of Anantha Babu’s bail, citing his violation of bail conditions set by the Supreme Court.
Anantha Babu, also known as Anantha Uday Bhaskar, stands accused of murdering his former driver, Subrahmanyam, and transporting the body to the victim’s home. The suspicious death of Subrahmanyam in Kakinada led to protests by his family and Dalit groups, prompting Anantha Babu’s arrest and subsequent suspension from the YSRCP. Despite being granted default bail due to a delay in filing charges, the case was reopened by the TDP-led coalition government in 2024.
