Annual defence production in India reached an unprecedented level of Rs 1.78 lakh crore in the financial year 2025-26, marking a threefold increase from the figures in FY 2014-15, as stated by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Simultaneously, defence exports surged to over Rs 38,000 crore, a significant rise from Rs 686 crore in FY 2013-14, showcasing a nearly 57-fold increase and emphasizing global trust in the ‘Make in India’ initiatives.
India’s progress over the past 12 years has transitioned from shortages to self-reliance, self-reliance to self-confidence, and self-confidence towards the creation of a developed India, highlighted Rajnath Singh during a media event. The government’s current focus on building a developed India is underlined by the policy of “Reform, Perform, Transform,” setting the stage for a promising future.
Rajnath Singh emphasized the remarkable shift in India’s global standing, with the world now paying close attention to India’s perspectives on global matters, a stark contrast to the past. Despite initial doubts surrounding the India Semiconductor Mission’s launch in 2021, the nation successfully produced its semiconductor chips last year, thanks to the establishment of semiconductor parks based on a ‘plug-and-play’ infrastructure model.
The minister also pointed out India’s substantial advancements in manufacturing and technology, citing achievements in mobile manufacturing, automobile exports, indigenous locomotive production, and digital infrastructure under the Make in India initiative. Noteworthy mentions include India’s digital revolution, with 22.35 billion UPI transactions valued at Rs 29 lakh crore in April, indicating an expanding international presence of the platform.
Furthermore, Rajnath Singh highlighted the swift nationwide deployment of domestically developed Make in India 5G technology, signaling ongoing efforts towards the advancement of 6G technology. He commended the successful implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), which has evolved into a model of cooperative federalism by enhancing coordination between the Centre and States/UTs.
