A husband-wife duo was arrested in Assam’s Silchar town after a joint operation by Assam Police and the Assam Rifles. The authorities recovered arms and explosives from a rented house in Tarapur 6th Block near Ramnagar. The operation, based on intelligence inputs and technical surveillance, led to the apprehension of Laishram Tiken Meitei and Monalisha Chanu from Manipur.
Security personnel found a 9 mm Italian-made pistol, five live rounds of ammunition, and a Chinese grenade during the search of the rented accommodation. The recovery of these weapons in a densely populated area raised concerns among residents, prompting heightened surveillance by security agencies. The couple had been discreetly residing in the locality for about one-and-a-half months, according to local sources.
Investigators are looking into possible connections of the arrested duo with banned militant groups in the Northeast. While the motive behind possessing the arms and explosives is not yet clear, authorities suspect they were intended for unlawful activities. The ongoing investigation includes scrutinizing the couple’s movements, communications, and contacts in Assam and Manipur.
Both accused individuals are under interrogation, and authorities do not rule out the possibility of further arrests or recoveries in the case.
