The National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested an American mercenary, Matthew Aaron VanDyke, and six Ukrainian nationals, uncovering a scheme targeting northeastern states in India. These individuals admitted to training Myanmar-based ethnic armed groups, prompting the NIA to search for local accomplices. The agency has apprehended seven suspects, with indications pointing to a possible nine others involved in the network.

Authorities are delving into the India connection of this group, which appears to have aimed at turning the northeast into a hub for foreign mercenaries. The arrested individuals, including VanDyke and the Ukrainians, face charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for their activities. Notably, their training encompassed not only conventional warfare but also the utilization of drone technology, with the group smuggling drones and jamming equipment from Europe under the guise of tourist visas.

The investigation reveals that this network has been operational since 2024, training insurgent groups in drone warfare and facilitating the movement of advanced drone equipment and electronic jamming devices from Europe. Concerns are raised about the broader implications of this network, indicating a larger agenda targeting the northeast. The discovery underscores the need for heightened scrutiny of visitors to the region, as many may not be genuine tourists but potentially involved in subversive activities.

The NIA’s vigilance over three months culminated in the arrests, shedding light on the porous border in Mizoram that has become a conduit for foreign mercenaries. The sophistication of the operation and involvement of foreign nationals signal a resurgence of insurgency in the northeast. Efforts are underway to bolster border security and collaborate with international partners like Russia to prevent such incidents and maintain peace in the region.
