Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia have each provided surety bonds of Rs 50,000 before a court in New Delhi. This action follows their discharge in a corruption case related to the now-defunct Delhi excise policy. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders appeared at the Rouse Avenue Court to comply with the court’s order.
In accordance with legal procedures, individuals who are discharged or acquitted in criminal cases must furnish a surety bond. This bond ensures their presence in court if the prosecution challenges the ruling. The Rouse Avenue Court had discharged all accused, including Kejriwal and Sisodia, in a detailed judgment comprising over 1,100 paragraphs on February 27. This ruling pertained to alleged irregularities in the formulation and execution of the excise policy during the AAP-led Delhi government’s tenure.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has contested the discharge order by filing a criminal revision petition with the Delhi High Court. Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma issued notices to Kejriwal, Sisodia, and other accused in response to the agency’s plea challenging the trial court’s decision. The Delhi High Court also temporarily halted the trial court’s directive for departmental action against the investigating officer involved in the case.
