Aryna Sabalenka emerged victorious over Naomi Osaka in an intense fourth-round clash at Roland Garros, securing a 7-5, 6-3 win and advancing to her 14th consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinal. Sabalenka, the sole remaining player in the women’s draw with a major final appearance, will now face No. 25 seed Diana Shnaider, who earned her first career Grand Slam quarterfinal berth by defeating No. 19 seed Madison Keys in three sets.
Osaka initially took a lead by winning the first two games of the match while Sabalenka faced challenges. Despite committing five unforced errors, including a crucial double fault on break point, Sabalenka managed to bounce back. She regained momentum with two forehand winners, securing a break back and maintaining a strong serve throughout the match. Remarkably, she did not encounter any break points or significant pressure beyond deuce for the remainder of the game, as per WTA reports.
The turning point came in the sixth game of the second set, with Osaka leading 3-2, where a tense exchange ensued. Following a six-minute game that followed Osaka’s 2-2 hold, Sabalenka’s four-game streak sealed the victory. Sabalenka, who narrowly missed claiming the French Open title last year, is now fully focused on her goal of winning this year’s championship.
“I’m not overthinking, I’ve managed to detach myself from the current events at Roland Garros this year,” Sabalenka stated. “I’ve gained experience. Anything is possible in tennis and sports, you know? I’m simply striving, once again, to concentrate on my performance and ensure that I bring my best level to the competition, giving my all to pursue this trophy.”
