The Foreign Ministers of Association of SouthEast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member countries gathered in Kuala Lumpur for a special meeting to address the ongoing tensions between Cambodia and Thailand. They emphasized the need for both nations to show restraint and take immediate actions to stop all forms of conflict. The meeting highlighted the importance of ASEAN unity and solidarity, as well as the centrality of ASEAN in maintaining regional peace, security, stability, and prosperity. Concerns were raised over the casualties, damage to infrastructure, and displacement of people resulting from the border tensions. The ministers urged Cambodia and Thailand to facilitate the safe return of affected civilians to their homes and livelihoods. The conflict at the Cambodia-Thailand border, reignited on December 7, prompted the call for maximum restraint and a return to dialogue. The participants emphasized the importance of restoring trust, engaging in dialogue, and upholding international law for a peaceful resolution. Malaysia, as the ASEAN Chair, briefed the meeting on efforts to mediate the conflict, with both Cambodia and Thailand presenting their positions. The ministers recalled previous agreements and urged full implementation for peace and stability in the region. Discussions on resuming the ceasefire and de-escalating hostilities were welcomed, with plans for further meetings to verify the ceasefire implementation.
