India’s Ashmita Chaliha showcased a strong performance at the Malaysia Masters, securing a spot in the women’s singles quarterfinals by defeating Malaysia’s Goh Jin Wei with scores of 21-13, 21-16. Chaliha, who started from the qualifiers, maintained control throughout the match, clinching victory in just 27 minutes.
This win marks Ashmita’s third entry into the quarterfinals of a Super 500 event in her career. Her next challenge will be against Denmark’s Line Hojmark Kjaersfeldt, the eighth seed, who advanced by overcoming Anmol Kharb and Malvika Bansod from India. Unfortunately, the remaining Indian players were eliminated from the tournament.
Malvika Bansod faced defeat in the second round against Denmark’s Kjaersfeldt despite a strong start in the opening game. The match concluded with a 16-21, 21-8, 21-15 victory for the Danish shuttler, ranked 23rd globally and seeded eighth, marking her second win over Bansod in three encounters.
Devika Sihag, another Indian contender, exited the women’s singles competition in the second round after a 21-16, 21-13 loss to China’s Chen Yufei, the former Olympic champion and top seed in the tournament.
On the men’s doubles front, India’s representation concluded as MR Arjun and Hariharan Amsakarunan, the sole Indian pair in the BWF Super 500 event, fell to China’s Hu Keyuan and Lin Xiangyi with scores of 21-14, 21-15.
In the mixed doubles category, the Indian duo of Sathwik Reddy Kanapuram and Radhika Sharma faced a defeat, losing 12-21, 25-27 to the USA’s Presley Smith and Jennie Gai.
