Asian Games medalist Harmilan Bains expressed that while Indian sports are progressing rapidly, there are disparities in opportunities and rewards for athletes despite the increasing support in the country. Bains, a middle-distance runner with one gold and two silver Asian Games medals, highlighted the unequal treatment of athletes within the system, where success does not guarantee equal job prospects.
Reflecting on her sports journey, Bains mentioned that her involvement in sports began even before her birth, as her mother was an athlete during pregnancy. She emphasized the significant impact sports have had on her life, with nearly 22 to 24 years of engagement since childhood. Bains also noted the shift in government recognition for athletes, pointing out the reduced direct appointments to high-ranking government positions for medal winners compared to previous generations.
Commending fellow athlete Gurindervir Singh’s recent achievements and the country’s improved sports infrastructure, Bains underscored the remarkable progress made despite limited facilities. Looking forward, her primary focus remains on maintaining fitness for the upcoming season and participating in scheduled tournaments injury-free. Stressing the importance of recovery and nutrition in sports, Bains highlighted the critical role of proper nourishment for optimal performance.
Addressing disparities in recognition within team events, Bains pointed out the demotivating effect on athletes when teammates receive varying cash rewards despite equal effort. Recognizing India’s sports growth and the role of institutions like the Sports Authority of India, Bains praised the creation of platforms for young athletes but highlighted the need for better awareness among children to access such opportunities through small academies.
