The nomination process for the Assam Assembly elections picked up pace as high-profile candidates, including Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, prepared to file their papers. CM Sarma, contesting from Jalukbari, will submit his nomination at the Kamrup (Metropolitan) District Election Office after leading a roadshow. Supporters are invited to join the rally to show their support for his re-election bid.
Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia will file his nomination from Nazira, a seat he has held since 2011 with strong family ties. Congress leader Ripun Bora is also entering the fray from Barchalla in North Assam. Regional forces like Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi and Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi are gearing up for the electoral battle.
The nominations mark a significant political milestone as key contenders officially join the race. The deadline for filing nominations is March 23, followed by scrutiny on March 24 and withdrawal until March 26. Polling for the 126-member Assembly is set for April 9, with results to be announced on May 4. The Bharatiya Janata Party’s strategy focuses on core support and expanding outreach through welfare schemes and leadership projection.
