BJP MLA Mrinal Saikia from Assam’s Khumtai Assembly constituency has urged for reductions in VIP convoy practices and heavy security measures for ministers. Saikia emphasized the need to cut down unnecessary government expenses to showcase financial discipline, stating that while controlling market prices may be challenging, curbing avoidable official costs is feasible. He criticized the extensive use of convoys and security personnel for ministers, except for the Chief Minister, questioning the necessity of large fleets of vehicles moving together.
Saikia also raised concerns about the deployment of pilot vehicles and scooter escorts during VIP movements, highlighting how these arrangements often disrupt regular traffic flow. He stressed that such excessive security protocols not only strain the administration financially but also lead to traffic hazards and public dissatisfaction. The MLA warned against the risks posed by reckless VIP convoys, noting that the high-speed movement of escort vehicles can cause accidents and inconvenience to the public.
Amid the government’s decision to scale down ministerial convoys in line with austerity measures prompted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Saikia’s remarks underscore the importance of adopting a culture of economic prudence and administrative efficiency to avoid unnecessary expenses and ensure public safety.
