BJP MLA Bhupen Borah from Assam’s Bihpuria Assembly constituency has urged the state government and police to take tougher actions against riders without helmets. Borah emphasized the need for fines and motorcycle seizures for up to a month following a series of fatal accidents involving youths in his area. He expressed concern over the increasing number of deaths due to motorcycle accidents, especially among young individuals in Assam.
Several families in the Tikira region under Borah’s constituency have recently faced tragic losses, with three youths losing their lives in accidents and another battling for survival. The MLA highlighted the distress among local residents caused by these recurring accidents, noting that many affected families are from economically weaker backgrounds. Borah mentioned the financial burden on bereaved families due to traditional customs and rituals of the Mising community after accidental deaths.
He stated that while local BJP workers are supporting affected households, stronger preventive measures are crucial to reduce such incidents. Borah proposed the implementation of speed restrictions for motorcycles, particularly targeting riders aged 19 to 25, to curb reckless driving. He plans to engage with the police administration in Bihpuria to enhance enforcement against traffic violations, advocating for strict penalties and motorcycle seizures for helmetless riders.
Questioning the freedom of helmetless riders despite awareness campaigns and legal provisions, Borah stressed the importance of stricter enforcement and public discipline to prevent further road fatalities in Assam. His recommendations align with the growing concerns over road safety and the increasing number of fatalities involving two-wheelers in the state.
