Assam BJP President Dilip Saikia criticized the Congress for opposing the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state, alleging it was for “vote bank politics.” He emphasized that the UCC would ensure equality and social harmony without discriminating against any community. Saikia commended Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for pushing forward the proposal to implement the UCC in Assam.
Referring to the UCC’s implementation in Uttarakhand, Saikia highlighted that there were no significant negative reactions following the law’s enforcement. He accused the Congress and other opposition leaders of sowing confusion among the public about the UCC for political gain. Saikia criticized senior Congress members, including Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi, for vehemently opposing the proposed law.
Saikia asserted that the UCC was essential for promoting unity, equality, and gender justice in the country. He claimed that the Congress’s politics were based on appeasement, vote-bank calculations, and dividing communities. The BJP vowed to continue advocating for the UCC, stating that it was in the best interest of the nation and Assamese society.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the UCC would be rolled out during the upcoming Assembly session starting on May 21.
