The Assam Cabinet has decided to establish a dedicated fast-track sessions court to oversee the trial concerning the passing of renowned singer Zubeen Garg. This move comes in light of the case’s sensitivity and broader implications. The decision was made during a Cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at Lok Sewa Bhawan.

Sarma mentioned that a specialized sessions court will be formed under Section 346(1) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, to ensure a prompt resolution of the case. The state government plans to approach the Gauhati High Court, seeking approval from the Chief Justice for the establishment of this fast-track court. The objective is to enable consistent and focused hearings, minimize procedural delays, and ensure a day-to-day trial process.

The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of addressing the public sentiment surrounding the case, considering Zubeen Garg’s significant role in Assam’s cultural domain. He stressed the necessity of a swift and transparent legal procedure to uphold public trust in the justice system. The Cabinet recognized that delays in such cases could fuel speculation, underscoring the need for appropriate judicial actions within the legal framework.

By opting for a dedicated sessions court, the government aims to expedite judicial proceedings while upholding the principles of due process and judicial autonomy. Upon receiving approval from the Gauhati High Court, the fast-track court will be officially established and operationalized. The government is committed to providing the necessary logistical and administrative support to ensure the court’s smooth functioning and to ensure a fair, speedy, and transparent trial in compliance with legal provisions and judicial authority.
