Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, revealed that more than 1.85 lakh undergraduate students in the state have benefited from the government’s free admission initiative this academic year. The Chief Minister highlighted the significance of this achievement, emphasizing the broad impact of welfare schemes in ensuring continuous access to higher education. Under the state government’s flagship education support program, admission fees for 1,85,796 undergraduate students have already been covered.
The initiative, designed to alleviate financial burdens on students and families, specifically covers admission fees for eligible learners enrolling in undergraduate courses at government and provincial institutions in Assam. By eliminating upfront admission costs, the program aims to support students from Economically Weaker Sections in pursuing higher education without hindrance. Additionally, it seeks to address dropout rates and enhance college enrollment, particularly in rural and underserved areas.
Education experts have noted that financial constraints often lead students to discontinue their studies after completing school. Through the waiver of admission fees, the government hopes to enhance access to quality higher education and expand opportunities for the youth. Emphasizing the importance of investing in education for Assam’s long-term development, the Chief Minister has implemented various measures, such as scholarships, fee waivers, and infrastructure enhancements in educational institutions.
With over 1.85 lakh beneficiaries already, the government views this program as a significant stride towards promoting inclusivity and accessibility in higher education for students throughout Assam.
