Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted Assam’s significant role in India’s silk sector, with the state contributing almost 90% of the country’s Muga silk production and about 65% of Eri silk output, establishing itself as a global hub for these indigenous silks.
Sarma emphasized the crucial impact of Assam’s Muga and Eri silk industries on rural livelihoods, the state’s agrarian economy, and the vision of #AtmanirbharAssam, stating that these sectors are fundamental to Assam’s self-reliant growth model.
The Chief Minister underscored the cultural and economic importance of Muga and Eri silk, describing them not just as textiles but as symbols of heritage and drivers of the rural economy in Assam.
The Assam government, under Sarma’s leadership, has implemented various initiatives to bolster the silk sector, focusing on enhancing productivity, expanding market reach, and ensuring sustainable incomes for weavers and rearers.
Efforts include providing financial aid to silk farmers, developing infrastructure, offering skill enhancement programs, and promoting Assam silk domestically and internationally, while also modernizing sericulture practices alongside preserving traditional methods.
Special programs have been introduced to empower women weavers, who are integral to Assam’s silk industry, with Muga silk holding a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for its unique qualities and Eri silk being recognized for its eco-friendly production process.
These silk varieties significantly contribute to job creation in rural and semi-urban areas, aligning with the government’s strategy to strengthen indigenous industries, boost exports, and foster a resilient rural economy based on Assam’s traditional strengths.
