Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized that the Northeast, previously seen as distant from India’s development, is now a crucial part of the country’s growth vision by 2047. Sarma mentioned that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the region, known as “Ashtalakshmi” for its eight states, is reshaping its development narrative. The Northeast has seen significant investments in infrastructure, connectivity projects, and economic integration since 2014, with a focus on sectors like tourism, agriculture, and renewable energy.
The Chief Minister’s comments coincide with the government’s efforts to enhance infrastructure, connectivity, and economic ties across the Northeastern states. Various initiatives, including the development of national highways, railway expansions, and improved air connectivity, aim to strengthen links between the Northeast and the rest of India. Additionally, the region is being promoted as a gateway to Southeast Asia as part of India’s Act East Policy, with a strategic emphasis on sectors like trade and logistics.
Sarma has consistently highlighted the positive changes in Assam and other Northeastern states, attributing this progress to sustained policy backing from the Central government. Both the BJP-led governments at the Centre and in the Northeast view the region as a key driver of India’s economic growth, leveraging its natural resources, geographic location, and economic potential to realize the objectives outlined in the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.
