Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma introduced the Assam Premier League (APL) as a vital platform for budding cricketers in the state to display their skills and potentially progress to higher levels like the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the national team. The league’s logo, along with those of participating franchises and the trophy, was unveiled at the ACA Stadium complex in Barsapara, marking a significant milestone in Assam’s sports journey.
During the launch event, CM Sarma commended the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) for successfully organizing a state-level franchise-based tournament modeled after the IPL. He acknowledged the support of franchise owners in materializing the league, emphasizing that it would offer talented young cricketers from various regions of Assam a platform to showcase their abilities to a broader audience and gain recognition.
Sarma expressed optimism that exceptional performers in the Assam Premier League could secure opportunities in the IPL and potentially represent India on the international stage. He highlighted the state government’s dedication to enhancing sports infrastructure, stressing the importance of nurturing sporting talent alongside developing stadiums and training facilities.
The inaugural edition of the APL will include eight franchise teams, such as Guwahati Royals, Jorhat Stallions, and Tezpur Titans, among others. Organizers have selected 160 players from a pool of 400 registered cricketers for the tournament, with matches set to be aired on Star Sports and streamed on JioHotstar.
