Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed the UNESCO World Heritage recognition plaque for the Charaideo Moidams, hailing it as a significant hub for academic and archaeological exploration. The unveiling ceremony took place at the Charaideo Moidam complex in Charaideo district. The Moidams secured their World Heritage Site status during the 46th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in New Delhi on July 26, 2024.
The Chief Minister expressed immense pride and joy over the global acknowledgment, considering it a major accomplishment for the state government in recent years. He emphasized that the UNESCO certificate, now displayed as a plaque, is open for public viewing to visitors from Assam and beyond. He announced plans for a specialized research center under a state university to facilitate in-depth studies and historical artifact discoveries by students pursuing doctoral research. The state government has allocated Rs. 25 crore for conservation efforts, including regular maintenance and the establishment of an annual fund.
The Chief Minister stressed the importance of community involvement, revealing plans for developing homestays, eco-friendly guesthouses, and promoting local festivals to enhance cultural tourism. He underlined the urgent need for the buffer zone’s development, encompassing 21 Moidams, temples, and royal burial sites, with a vision to transform Charaideo into a renowned national and international heritage tourism destination.
