Assam’s Chief Minister announced plans to intensify the fight against drug trafficking in the state over the next five years. He emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts among northeastern states to eliminate Assam’s role as a transit point for narcotics.
The state-wide Drugs Disposal Campaign was launched at the 14th Assam Police Battalion campus in Nalbari district. The government aims to implement stricter measures against drug traffickers and urged public participation in the anti-narcotics campaign.
As part of the initiative, Assam Police commenced the disposal of narcotic substances valued at Rs 472.51 crore seized in various operations. The destroyed contraband includes heroin, ganja, methamphetamine, Yaba tablets, morphine, opium, cough syrup, tablets, and capsules, among other banned substances.
The Chief Minister inaugurated a secure drug disposal machine with support from the Central government and initiated the destruction process by crushing seized narcotics using a road roller. Similar disposal drives are being carried out simultaneously in all districts.
Sarma mentioned that it would take approximately 10 days to dispose of the seized narcotics, highlighting the first-time use of the specialized disposal machine in Assam. Official data indicates that the disposal exercise encompasses various drugs like heroin, ganja, cough syrup, morphine, methamphetamine, Yaba tablets, and capsules.
