Assam’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is set to provide video footage related to the death of popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore to a Fast Track Court. The CID’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) will present electronic devices and digital evidence in court, a significant step in the ongoing trial.
Sources linked to the investigation revealed that the agency plans to show the court video footage of the incident that led to Zubeen Garg’s demise in Singapore on September 19 last year. This submission of footage is anticipated to play a vital role in the prosecution’s evidence as the trial advances.
The case revolves around the singer’s death while swimming near Lazarus Island in Singapore, a day before his scheduled performance at an event under the North East International Festival (NEIF) banner. Following the tragic incident, the Assam Police CID formed an SIT to investigate the circumstances surrounding his passing.
The recent court session follows the examination of several prosecution witnesses before the Fast Track Court. Special Public Prosecutor Ziaur Kamar mentioned that the evidence recording process is moving forward steadily, with multiple witnesses already testifying in court.
Legal proceedings concerning one of the main accused, Siddhartha Sarma, are progressing separately. Sarma, a former manager of Zubeen Garg, appealed to the Gauhati High Court after a Fast Track Court denied his bail request. The High Court has requested case records and scheduled a hearing.
The CID SIT has filed a chargesheet naming seven accused individuals in the case, with four facing murder charges and others accused under different legal provisions. By submitting digital evidence from Singapore, investigators anticipate strengthening the prosecution’s case as the court proceeds with witness examinations and documentary evidence.
