Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma criticized the Congress, stating that the party lacks organizational strength in the state and is unlikely to succeed in the upcoming Assembly elections. Speaking during a campaign event in Tongla, Sarma emphasized that the Congress has become a party without a substantial presence in Assam.
Sarma highlighted the strong grassroots support enjoyed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) throughout the state. He also condemned the Congress for involving popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg in its election manifesto, considering it a misguided decision that disregards public sentiment.
Regarding the planned visit of AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi to Assam, Sarma downplayed its potential political impact, suggesting that Owaisi would focus on constituencies where the BJP is less dominant. Sarma expressed confidence in the BJP’s prospects in the 2026 Assembly elections, attributing it to the government’s development initiatives and welfare programs.
The Assam Assembly elections are anticipated to witness a competitive race, with the BJP-led NDA eyeing a third consecutive term while the Congress and other opposition parties strive to strengthen their positions. Political activities have intensified in the state as parties intensify their campaigning efforts ahead of the polls, scheduled for April 9, with vote counting set for May 4.
