Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed disappointment over the politicization of the legacy of renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg. Sarma emphasized that the public wishes for Garg to be revered beyond political associations. Speaking at the memorial site “Zubeen Khetra” in Guwahati, where Garg’s last rites were conducted, Sarma mentioned that certain individuals had diverted discussions from Garg’s life and contributions to political matters.
The Chief Minister highlighted that the focus had shifted towards political debates rather than honoring Zubeen Garg’s artistic legacy. Sarma anticipated that post-elections, the attention would revert to Garg’s artistic spirit and contributions. He noted a shift in public discourse towards preserving Garg’s musical and cultural impact, away from political controversies.
Sarma criticized those who had previously criticized Zubeen Garg but later attempted to associate themselves with him. He emphasized the special place Garg held in their hearts, both in the past and for the future. The Chief Minister also mentioned that the opposition parties faced backlash for politicizing the singer during the elections, citing instances of using Garg’s images at polling booths, a move that was not well-received by the public.
