Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the ‘Asom Mala’ road infrastructure project for its transformative effects, upgrading the state’s roads to world-class highways and enhancing connectivity. The initiative has led to faster travel, improved logistics, and stronger links between districts and states. Under this program, Assam aims to modernize key highways and district roads, similar to the national Bharatmala scheme.
The Asom Mala project focuses on enhancing road quality, reducing travel time, and connecting economic hubs, border areas, and remote regions. It prioritizes strategic corridors linking industrial zones, tourist spots, and rural-urban areas. Upgraded road sections now feature high-speed lanes with improved safety measures and durable surfaces suitable for Assam’s terrain.
The improved road infrastructure has significantly boosted economic activities by facilitating smoother transportation of goods and people. This has reduced logistics costs for industries, increased market access for farmers and small businesses, and improved emergency services. The initiative aligns with the Act East Policy, aiming to make Assam a connectivity hub for the Northeast region.
By strengthening road links within and beyond the state, the Asom Mala program is expected to enhance trade, tourism, and investments in the region. The initiative is a vital component of Assam’s infrastructure-led growth strategy, fostering inclusive development and creating new opportunities for the state’s future.
