Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that restaurants in Guwahati will be open until 3.30 a.m. on four days to accommodate football fans watching the FIFA World Cup semi-finals and final. The District Administration in Guwahati has been given the authority to extend restaurant operating hours on July 15, 16, 19, and 20. CM Sarma emphasized the importance of allowing sports enthusiasts to enjoy the matches without inconvenience.
The Chief Minister mentioned the possibility of similar relaxations in other districts of Assam based on local demand. He authorized District Administrations to grant extensions upon requests from Restaurant Owners’ Associations and the public. This move aims to benefit football fans who gather at eateries to watch late-night international matches on big screens.
With the FIFA World Cup reaching its final stages, a surge in crowds is expected at hospitality establishments, especially in Guwahati, known for its strong football following. The temporary extension of operating hours seeks to facilitate public viewing while ensuring fans can watch the matches at designated venues. CM Sarma also urged responsible celebration of the sport.
The state government’s decision aligns with its efforts to promote sports and enhance sporting infrastructure in Assam. By accommodating public enthusiasm for global sporting events, the government supports local businesses in catering to increased demand during late-night matches. District administrations will oversee the implementation of extended operating hours to meet local requirements and ensure public safety.
