Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma initiated the export of 500 kg of GI-tagged Tezpur litchis to Singapore from Guwahati. This move signifies Assam’s endeavor to promote its premium agricultural products globally. The state had recently shipped Tezpur litchis to Dubai, showcasing a rising international demand for the fruit.
Sarma highlighted the increasing popularity of Tezpur litchis in foreign markets over the years. Notably, a significant quantity of these litchis was exported to Dubai through APEDA. The Chief Minister mentioned that the current consignment bound for Singapore will be flown via a Druk Air flight from Bhutan through Guwahati.
Assam holds great potential in exporting various unique agricultural goods like Kaji Nemu, Bhut Jolokia, and litchis globally. Sarma emphasized the importance of adhering to quality standards and production practices for products like jackfruit and ginger to become key export items. Despite constraints in production, he expressed optimism that the export drive would motivate more farmers to cultivate litchis and boost the state’s agricultural exports.
