Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized the state government’s efforts to enhance modern infrastructure in Majuli, the core of Assam’s Vaishnavite culture. He highlighted the historical neglect faced by Majuli under past Congress administrations, stating that the current administration is actively addressing this through robust infrastructure initiatives. Sarma underscored the significance of Majuli as the world’s largest inhabited river island and a key hub of neo-Vaishnavite heritage.
The Chief Minister criticized the lack of attention from previous Congress governments towards improving connectivity and basic amenities on Majuli. He expressed determination to rectify the prolonged inaction with a strong focus on infrastructure development, including road connectivity, ferry services, flood-resilient structures, and public amenities to uplift the island’s residents and support cultural institutions like the satras.
Sarma highlighted the government’s commitment to enhancing embankments, ensuring all-weather connectivity, and upgrading civic services on Majuli. Efforts are also directed towards improving healthcare, education, and digital access on the island. He stressed the importance of balancing development with cultural preservation, ensuring that infrastructure projects in Majuli are sensitive to its ecological fragility and cultural heritage.
The Chief Minister reiterated the government’s dedication to safeguarding Majuli’s identity while propelling its progress in alignment with Assam’s overall development trajectory. Amid ongoing political exchanges between the BJP and Congress, Sarma affirmed the government’s resolve to fulfill the expectations of Majuli’s residents by providing essential facilities and preserving its spiritual and cultural essence.
