Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of Assam conducted a virtual meeting with BJP candidates, MPs, state officials, and district presidents to assess readiness before the Assembly election results are announced. The meeting focused on coordination, monitoring at the booth level, counting preparations, and post-result strategies as the state awaits the electoral outcome. State BJP President Dilip Saikia was also in attendance during the session.
Senior party members discussed updates on a district level and emphasized the importance of vigilance and communication with counting agents and election representatives at the local level. The ruling BJP-led NDA is aiming for a third consecutive term in Assam, while the Congress-led Opposition alliance is confident in presenting a strong challenge.
Counting of votes for the 126-member Assam Assembly is scheduled to commence on Monday morning under stringent security measures statewide. The counting process will begin with postal ballots followed by Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) votes in accordance with Election Commission guidelines. Several exit polls have indicated a clear victory for the BJP in Assam, suggesting that Chief Minister Sarma is poised to secure a second consecutive term in office.
Most pollsters anticipate the BJP comfortably surpassing the majority threshold in the 126-member Assam Assembly, with projections indicating the party could secure over 80 seats independently. The majority mark in the Assembly stands at 64 seats. If these projections hold true, it would signify another strong mandate for the BJP in the politically significant northeastern state, further solidifying Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership position.
In the 2021 Assembly elections, the BJP-led NDA retained power by winning 75 seats in Assam. The Congress-led Opposition bloc secured 50 seats, while one seat was claimed by an Independent candidate. Assam was notably one of the states where exit polls in 2021 closely aligned with the final results, accurately predicting the BJP’s return to power within a narrow margin of error. With similar predictions emerging this time, all attention is now on the final results to see if the ruling party can convert these forecasts into another resounding victory.
