Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, praised a police team in Sribhumi district for confiscating 30,000 Yaba tablets valued at approximately Rs 3 crore and apprehending three individuals linked to the drug haul. Sarma reiterated the government’s strong stance against drug trafficking, emphasizing the state’s anti-drug campaign.
The Chief Minister, in a social media post, applauded the police’s swift action in intercepting the significant consignment of Yaba tablets. The seized contraband, estimated to be worth nearly Rs 3 crore in the illegal market, was seized during a police operation in Sribhumi district.
The crackdown on drug smuggling was part of the state’s ongoing efforts to combat narcotics. The authorities have detained three suspects allegedly involved in the smuggling ring and are conducting further investigations to uncover the source of the drugs and dismantle the trafficking network.
The Barak valley region in Southern Assam has frequently been exploited as a transit point for drug trafficking due to its proximity to interstate borders with Manipur and Mizoram. Yaba, a potent mix of methamphetamine and caffeine, is a commonly trafficked synthetic drug known for its stimulant effects.
Assam, strategically located in the Northeast, has been a target for drug traffickers attempting to use the state as a conduit for illegal substances. Since assuming office in 2021, the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government has escalated its efforts to combat drug-related activities, with law enforcement agencies conducting regular raids and disrupting trafficking networks.
Law enforcement officials have vowed to continue anti-narcotics operations in vulnerable districts to combat drug trafficking and prevent the spread of psychotropic substances in the state. The recent seizure is part of a series of significant drug busts in Assam, reflecting the authorities’ commitment to tightening surveillance along key trafficking routes.
