Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the Maa Kamakhya Access Corridor project in Guwahati will speed up soon as most legal obstacles have been resolved. The project aims to enhance the pilgrimage experience at the Kamakhya temple atop Nilachal Hill. Sarma emphasized the state government’s dedication to improving facilities for visitors.
The Rs 498 crore Maa Kamakhya Access Corridor project, initiated in February 2024, is a significant temple redevelopment endeavor in the Northeast. It focuses on upgrading infrastructure around the revered Kamakhya temple to ease congestion and enhance devotees’ movement, particularly during events like the Ambubachi Mela.
The project includes the construction of a three-level corridor and widening access pathways from 8-10 feet to 27-30 feet. Additionally, it plans to expand the open space around the temple complex from 3,000 square feet to over 1 lakh square feet. The corridor project falls under the PM-DevINE scheme.
After facing legal and environmental challenges, the project received approval from the Gauhati High Court in February following studies by the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati and the Indian Institute of Hydrology. The state government assures that the revised plan will uphold the temple’s heritage while providing improved facilities and safer access for devotees and tourists.
