Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that Union Home Minister Amit Shah has pledged full assistance to the state as it grapples with severe flooding affecting over 22,000 individuals. CM Sarma expressed gratitude for HM Shah’s concern, particularly for the distressed Dhemaji district, where relief efforts are ongoing. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority reported that six districts, including Dhemaji, Nalbari, and Dibrugarh, are facing the brunt of the floods due to heavy rainfall in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
Assam’s Dhemaji district is the hardest hit, with 15,483 people affected by the rising waters caused by continuous rainfall. The floods have submerged 96 villages and destroyed around 1,690 hectares of farmland, impacting crops and livelihoods. Additionally, over 48,000 livestock have been affected, compounding the challenges faced by the local population.
The ongoing deluge has led to the Disang River in Sivasagar district surpassing the danger mark at Nanglamuraghat, heightening concerns of further flooding in low-lying areas if the heavy rainfall persists. In Dhemaji, heavy rain and erosion caused a railway bridge over the Simen River to partially collapse, disrupting rail services between Archipathar and Simen Chapari stations. The Northeast Frontier Railway has halted train operations in the region due to severe flooding and structural damage to the bridge.
Authorities are actively engaged in relief and rehabilitation efforts in the affected districts, with a continued focus on preparedness as forecasts predict more rainfall in the region.
