Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for unveiling the revamped Majbat Railway Station. The 117-year-old station, located in Assam’s Udalguri district, has undergone a modern transformation with upgraded passenger facilities and amenities under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. This redevelopment signifies the government’s commitment to enhancing railway infrastructure in the Northeast, with 50 stations in Assam currently undergoing similar upgrades.
The historic Majbat Railway Station, established during the British era in 1909, has historically served as a crucial transport hub connecting tea-growing regions in northern Assam with major commercial centers. Over the years, it has facilitated the transportation of tea, timber, agricultural produce, and passengers, playing a vital role in bolstering connectivity between remote areas and the rest of the country. The station’s modernization under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme aims to preserve its heritage while offering contemporary passenger amenities, blending heritage conservation with infrastructure development.
The redevelopment of Majbat Railway Station is part of a larger initiative to modernize railway infrastructure across the country, focusing on improving passenger amenities, accessibility, and station infrastructure while incorporating local architectural elements. This effort not only enhances passenger convenience but also strengthens rail connectivity and supports economic activities in various parts of Assam. The state government emphasizes that improved railway infrastructure will not only boost tourism and trade but also enhance regional connectivity, particularly in Assam’s interior districts.
