Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, revealed that the Assam Legislative Assembly’s upcoming session will commence on May 21, with the government presenting the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) on May 26. Sarma assured that tribal communities in the state would be excluded from the UCC legislation. The new government’s policy decisions will be influenced by the BJP’s election manifesto, serving as the foundation for governance priorities.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the BJP’s election manifesto, known as Sankalp Patra, will guide the government’s policy directions and implementation strategies. The recent Cabinet meeting, the first under Sarma’s second term, was attended by four Cabinet ministers, including Rameswar Teli, Atul Bora, Ajanta Neog, and Charan Bodo. Discussions in the meeting revolved around governance priorities, legislative agendas, and development plans for the BJP-led NDA government in Assam.
Assam’s move towards implementing the UCC, following Uttarakhand, is a significant development. The state government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the constitutional rights and customary practices of tribal communities. Sarma affirmed the government’s dedication to development, infrastructure enhancement, welfare schemes, and law enforcement, while ensuring the fulfillment of electoral promises.
