Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized the need for joint efforts to eliminate child labor and ensure every child’s access to education, safety, and opportunities for growth. On the World Day Against Child Labour, he highlighted the significance of safeguarding children’s rights and securing their future through education and development. Sarma’s message on social media platform X underscored the importance of ensuring that children have access to learning opportunities rather than being burdened with labor.
The World Day Against Child Labour, observed annually on June 12, aims to raise awareness about the challenges faced by millions of working children worldwide and promote initiatives to end child exploitation. Sarma stressed the pivotal role of education in shaping a brighter future, advocating for children to be in school environments rather than engaged in labor activities. He called upon society, institutions, and individuals to collaborate in creating conducive conditions for every child to reach their full potential.
Child rights advocates and social organizations have long emphasized the significance of quality education, social protection measures, and robust enforcement of labor laws in combating child labor. Both national and state-level government programs have focused on enhancing school enrollment, reducing dropout rates, and supporting vulnerable families. Assam has implemented various initiatives to improve educational access and child welfare, particularly in rural and economically disadvantaged communities.
The Chief Minister’s message aligns with ongoing calls from child welfare groups for increased awareness and community involvement in preventing child labor and ensuring children’s enjoyment of their fundamental rights. Across Assam, events commemorating the World Day Against Child Labour saw educational institutions, civil society organizations, and government bodies reaffirming their dedication to fostering a safer and more inclusive environment for children.
