Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma pledged to escalate eviction efforts and release up to 5 lakh hectares of encroached land if the BJP secures victory in the upcoming Assembly polls. Sarma, while campaigning for BJP candidate Nilima Devi in Mangaldoi, criticized opposition figures, asserting their inability to match the support of the Assamese people. He emphasized a firm stance against encroachment, warning of stricter measures in the future.
The Chief Minister disclosed that the government has already reclaimed around 1.5 lakh hectares of encroached land and proposed freeing an additional 5 lakh hectares if re-elected. Sarma highlighted the government’s ongoing eviction operations targeting encroachments on government land, forests, and protected areas, particularly in regions like Darrang, Nagaon, and Upper Assam. These actions have been framed as initiatives to secure land for indigenous communities and development.
While defending the eviction drives as essential to safeguard Assamese land rights, Sarma acknowledged the controversies surrounding the displacements and humanitarian concerns raised by opposition parties. Reiterating the BJP’s commitment to protecting the state’s interests and identity, he assured continued decisive actions. Sarma urged voters to back the BJP candidate in Mangaldoi, expressing confidence in the party’s prospects for a strong electoral mandate.
