Senior Congress MLA and Leader of Opposition in Assam Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, has firmly denied any plans to join the BJP, putting an end to recent political rumors. His statement follows Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s comments hinting at more Congress leaders defecting to the BJP after Bhupen Borah’s upcoming switch. Saikia, without directly naming Sarma, expressed disappointment over certain remarks that he believed were offensive to the people of Assam.
Saikia emphasized that despite a leader’s acknowledgment of Assamese society’s warmth, there are fundamental ideological differences that cannot be reconciled. He stated his commitment to Gandhian ideology and his opposition to any politics that divides the Assamese community, firmly rejecting the BJP’s advances. Saikia made it clear that he stands by his decision not to join the BJP under any circumstances, closing the matter definitively.
In a clear message amidst the Congress’s internal turmoil, Saikia acknowledged the guidance of senior leaders but stressed that real political progress requires persistent effort, not shortcuts. His remarks are viewed as a direct response to Sarma’s assertions about potential defections from the Congress to the BJP. With Bhupen Borah’s imminent move to the BJP, Saikia’s unwavering stance distinguishes him as one of the few senior Congress figures upholding ideological integrity amid the party’s current challenges in Assam.
