Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi criticized the BJP-led Assam government for suppressing political opposition. He raised concerns after police confiscated Congress documents targeting Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and arrested four party members in Guwahati. Gogoi stated that the government’s actions indicated a fear of criticism and an effort to silence the Opposition.
Gogoi highlighted the irony of a government claiming strength yet reacting strongly to mere pamphlets. The seized documents reportedly contained corruption allegations against Sarma and his wife, intended for public distribution. Congress leaders, including Assam Mahila Congress president Meera Borthakur, demanded explanations from the police regarding the seizure.
The arrested Congress workers, including members of the NSUI, were taken into custody and presented before a court. The APCC has filed bail petitions for them, with legal representation provided by advocate Amon Wadud. Congress leaders hinted at potential legal actions against the government over the document seizure and arrests.
